The CGRP sequence was deduced from its corresponding mRNA. CGRP is found in the C-cells of the thyroid and in nerves, both in the brain and periphery, notably within the sensory system. CGRP acts as a potent vasodilator, potentially involved in neurogenic inflammation. Thyroid medullary carcinomas contain substantial amounts of CGRP. Absorption with 10-100 µg CGRP per ml of diluted antiserum eliminates staining, unlike calcitonin. It does not cross-react with amylin (IAPP).
