وصف
Members of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, including the protein encoded by this gene, contribute to the degradation of extracellular matrix in both normal processes like embryonic development and tissue remodeling, and disease states such as arthritis and metastasis. Unlike most MMPs, this protein is part of the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) subfamily, anchored to the plasma membrane via a glycosylphosphatidyl inositol anchor. It's believed to inactivate alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor in response to bacterial infection or inflammation, aiding neutrophil migration to inflammatory sites. Additionally, it may facilitate tumor invasion and metastasis by activating MMP2. Originally known as MMP20, this gene has been renamed MMP25.
