About Mad River
Jim Henry, Mad River Canoe company founder, designed and built the first Malecite in 1971. He then won the Downriver National Championship in the boat, word spread, and demand grew.
From the beginning, Mad River Canoe explored new designs and experimented with new materials. The company was the first to introduce Kevlar to the canoe industry, and among the first to adopt molded Royalex canoes. Mad River now offers a wide variety of hull designs and continues to seek design innovation. Canoe & Kayak Magazine has recognized the company with three Manufacturer of the Year awards.
