It prevents the entry of sand and dust into your engine so it doesn't grind your piston rings into powder, and can lengthen your engine life to easily.
You can wash and reuse it several times. Do that every 20K miles or less.
you can make different shapes and glue it together to make round air cleaner filter covers.
once you put it on over your round style filter, the paper never gets dirty. on flat style filters you just tale out the filter, cut a piece to fit under the paper filter with a pair of scissors, and put the paper filter back in on top of it and away you go.
