Regions where cypress trees can grow are extremely rare worldwide, mainly located along both sides of the Pacific Rim, including the west coast of North America, Canada, Japan, and Taiwan. Taiwan's unique warm and humid island environment is considered the only subtropical climate suitable for the growth of cypress trees. In addition to Taiwan's two most renowned species, Taiwan Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana) and Taiwan Red Cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis), there are other aromatic and high-quality tree species such as Taiwan Incense Cedar (Calocedrus formosana), Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides), and Taiwania Cunninghamii (Cunninghamia lanceolata). These trees are known for their fragrant wood, appealing hues, and excellent material properties. In 1912, H.J. Elwes, a British forestry scholar, visited Taiwan to study its forests and designated these five conifers as the “Five Precious Conifers of Taiwan,” quietly protecting this island with their enduring presence.
