Welcome to our calendar, a listing of 150 events celebrating the ordinary throughout the year around the world. The events involve simple, everyday things, things others often think are dull. We avoid glamorous events. In the UK, instead of races like Royal Ascot and Formula 1, we go to races like the World Championship Snail Racing in Congham, Norfolk or the Stilton Cheese Rolling in Stilton, Cambridgeshire. Instead of the Chelsea Flower Show, we go to the Yorkshire Rhubarb Festival. In the US, instead of the Indianapolis 500, we watch ferret racing at the Ferret Buckeye Bash in Ohio. The World Yo-Yo contest will take place in Prague. The Battle of the Oranges will take place in Italy. There will be hot air balloon festivals in France, birthplace of the hot air balloon. We're giving a good name to a four-letter word. But we are not dullards. We are dullsters, the opposite of hipsters. It's OK to be dull. Instead of constantly striving for greater and grander, slow down and look around. Be grateful for the simple things you see. In the words of Einstein, “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”
