When it comes to sound recording for videos, the choice of microphone is often underestimated. The quality of the camera-integrated microphones often leaves much to be desired and does not match the high video resolution. They capture sound evenly from all directions and record audio in clear quality only when the sound source is close to the camera. This leads to a faded sound with a lack of speech intelligibility even with normal camera distances. To improve speech intelligibility, a directional microphone can help. It captures the sound respectively tuned to the focus of the camera and suppresses background noise. However, a normal directional microphone is mono, which restricts the sound pattern. A stereo microphone can add spatial depth to the sound image. However, most common XY stereo microphones pick up ambient noise from all directions - with often unwanted background noise from the side or back of the camera. The MKE 440 picks up the sound to the video image and effectively attenuates background noise that lies away from the shooting axis and camera focus. It combines the advantages of both microphone concepts and delivers stereo sound without unwanted side effects.
