The name of Virgin Mary comes from the anthem of the compline, the Night Prayer, "Spotless, Uncorrupted, Untainted..." composed by the monk Pavlos of the monastery of Evergetos. The Virgin the Immaculated in Orthodox iconography also bears the name Virgin of the Passion, because Christ contemplates at the two angels depicted on both sides of the Virgin Mary and holding in their hands the symbols of passion, namely the Cross, the Spear and the Sponge. The original template of the icon is attributed to the Icon painter of the 15th century, Andreas Ritzos, whose works are presented in Italy and Patmos. The icon is displayed in the Byzantine Museum of Athens.
