A traditional prayer dating back to the 8th century, Ave Maris Stella - Mary Star of the Sea - is also a classic image of hope and light in the midst of darkness. Inspired by the beautiful sight of my own children at the edge of the ocean with their dad, I chose to focus on Mary's relationship with Jesus as a young child. On tip-toes, Jesus reaches for and, indeed, places the stars by which Mary - and we ourselves - are illuminated and enlightened. The images of boating/sailing, beach and moon, and iconic yet contemporary mother and child help bring this ancient prayer into the spaces of modern life - beach cottages, nautical office spaces, nurseries...
