Vacuum Pump Technology The vacuum pump is an essential component that is often overlooked. It's a very important hardworking component. In the confined space of the engine bay it is often difficult to equip each component with motors powerful enough to operate them. Pneumatic actuators, powered by vacuum pressure, can supply the high actuation force needed to control components such as:
1. Brake boosters
2. Secondary air valves
3. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves
4. Turbocharger controls
5. Central locking systems Removal and Installation The vacuum pump is driven by the alternator rotor shaft.

The pump is lubricated by engine oil.

To install:
1. Drain the oil from the vacuum pump by manually rotating the fan belt clockwise to discharge any oil in the pump.
2. Disconnect all oil pipes and vacuum hoses from the pump.
3. Remove the pump from the alternator assembly.
4. Prime the pump with clean engine oil.
5. Install the pump and torque the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs.
6. Connect all oil pipes and vacuum hoses. Torque the banjo fittings to 22-25 ft. lbs
