Your scan is only as sharp as your setup allows. This is how you find out where you stand. Film flatness, focus accuracy, and corner sharpness are three separate variables that all look identical when they go wrong. A scan soft on one side might be film curl, a tilted film holder, or a focus shift. Without something to measure against, you are guessing which problem to fix and which expensive piece of gear to blame. Vlads Test Target is a photographic film transparency — the same transparent medium as your actual negatives and slides. 35mm checkers are made on Adox CMS 20 Pro II, the finest-resolution consumer film available, with target elements running at 100 lp/mm — more than any consumer scanning lens can resolve. Medium and large format checkers are made on Agfa Gevaert industrial-grade emulsion, a professional film stock used in technical and scientific imaging, with chart elements at 43 lp/mm — sufficient for any medium format scanning setup up to 2200 ppi. The checker is never the bottleneck. Whatever limit you find in your scan is in your setup, not in this reference. What it tells you: Scan one frame before you scan anything that matters. If one edge is sharp and the opposite is soft, your film is not lying flat in the gate — not your lens. If all corners and centre are soft, your focus is slightly off. If corners are soft but the centre is sharp, your lens may be the limiting factor at the edges. The checker separates these cases clearly so you fix the right thing the first time.
