The Mohs relative hardness scale forms the basis of mineral hardness testing. Minerals are graded on an arbitrary 1-10 scale, with each number relating to a mineral standard. This kit introduces students to the Mohs scale and allows them to test the hardness of four mineral samples, as well as giving them the tools to test mineral hardness of local samples. This kit works well as an introduction into mineral physical properties and identification. Providing enough materials for 15 groups of students, each kit also includes a teacher's guide, student study guide copy masters, and material safety data sheets (MSDS). This kit aligns with next Generation Science Standard MS-PS1-3, relating to structure and function.
