A jinbaori is an outer garment worn by samurai over their armor on the battlefield. It is also called a gusokubaori or jindofuku. While most are sleeveless, some have large, wide sleeves or kosode-style tamoto (sleeves). Early jinbaori show the influence of Nanban (Southern Barbarian) clothing, but the overall design is free and unconventional. Made from materials such as silk, woolen cloth, hemp, paper, and leather, some are decorated with crests and patterns using painting, embroidery, or inlay, and there are also rare examples with bird feathers attached to the chincoat. In the Edo period, it became primarily a decorative and formal garment used as ceremonial attire.
