Storage: Fuel vapors from the tank are captured and stored in a charcoal canister (also called a vapor canister); Purge: When the engine is running under specific conditions (e.g., at operating temperature, under load), the engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM) sends a signal to the purge valve; Recycling: The valve opens, allowing engine vacuum to draw these stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the engine's intake manifold to be burned normally during combustion.
