Don "The Snake" Prudhomme (April 6, 1941), a true legend of sport, ended his 47th Year in drag racing when he retired in 2009. He spent 32 seasons at the wheel as one of the sport's elite drivers, followed by 15 seasons as a successful team owner. He began his career as a crew member for TV Tommy Ivo, but at 20 he scored his first professional victory in a dragster. In 1965, he was the first to win both the Winter Nationals and the U.S. Nationals in the same season. He moved from Top Fuel to Funny Cars in 1973 and won his first national championship. In 1975, he was the first to break the 6-second mark. In 1980, he set the NHRA Funny Car World Record, a record he surpassed two more times and completed in 1988 with a time of 5.305 seconds. Prudhomme did not stop rewriting the NHRA's record books, though he abandoned his role as a driver to become the owner of a multi-car team. He has been inducted into both the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
