The 1 st Cavalry Division was founded in 1921 as a horse cavalry division consisting of regiments formed in the 1800s. Serving continuousty since its founding, the "First Team" has served during such conflicts as World far II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, the Iraq War. and the War in Afghanistan.

The 1st Cavalry has served as a horse cavalry, infantry, air assault, armored, and combined arms division throughout its history. It is particularly notable for having been among the first air assault formations in the world, taking advantage of the U.S. Army's new helicopters to perform airmobile operations. In the 1960s, the 1st Cavalry was reformed from elements of the 2nd Infantry Division and 11th Air Assault Division. Meanwhile, the 1 st Cavalry's units stationed in Korea were reflagged as the 2nd Infantry Division, which remains tied to Korea to this day.

In 1965, the division's 7th and 5th Cavalry Regiments engaged in America's first major battle against North Vietnamese forces at the Battle of ta Drang immortalized in the film "We Were Soldiers."
