Code 88 or "Semi-Scale" is used by modelers to achieve a more prototypical looking wheel width that is closer to the .067" width an actual HO scale wheel would measure. Code 88 wheels look really good and are very noticeable on open frame cars like hoppers and tank cars. They aren't quite as noticeable on boxcars, gondolas, and reefers but still look fantastic!
