Potassium silicate has a strong alkaline reaction. Decomposes in an acid to precipitate silica. Slowly soluble in cold water or almost insoluble in water (depending on its composition), insoluble in ethanol. Potassium silicate is commonly used in the manufacture of welding electrodes, welding electrodes, vat dyes. Also used as a phosphor screen coating and soap filler. In the steady state, it is a transparent and viscous liquid, which is blue-green. Soluble in water and acid, and precipitated colloidal silicic acid, the higher the potassium content, the more soluble. Insoluble in alcohol.
