A komboskoini or chotki is a cord with many knots, used by Christians to count the number of times they have prayed the Jesus Prayer or, occasionally, other prayers. The use of the komboskoini or chotki enables one to pray the Jesus Prayer unceasingly and without distraction, aiding in overcoming temptations in one's spiritual struggle to fulfill God's commandments. We were created by God and for God, and only with Him can we be fulfilled in every good sense of the word. God is our parent, our closest neighbor, our joy, our comfort, our patience, our perseverance, our repentance, our tears, our prayer, our love, our freedom, our happiness, our health, our food, our drink, our clothing, our future, our goal, our strength, and―all things ours. It is up to us to have a good intention, to use the gift of freedom to build union with God (through prayer) and to struggle in that direction. Everything else is an act of God's grace, which cooperates with us.
