The Black Marker included here works great on bad ice and makes a simple quick crease. The black marker is permanent ink. Potentially can stain pads in some conditions but the black often blends in with puck marks and is not significantly visible. The washable gray marker is 100% safe on pads as it sticks to the ice great and washable ink in light gray color. The user simply attached the cord with carabiner to the center of the cross bar then draws the cord out of the retractable box until it stops. Then push the marker into the ice and trace like a protractor.
