Makko Powder (Machilus thunbergii) - 8 oz (227 grams) by Nectar Cloud Incense High grade Makko powder for incense making. 100% pure and finely ground, just add your aromatic ingredients and water to start making your own incense! Makko acts as a binder of other ingredients when making incense cones, coils and extruded sticks. It also promotes smooth, even combustion. It imparts very little of its own scent besides a mild and unobtrusive woody aroma. It can enhance the aroma of other ingredients too. Suggested use: Use approximately 1 part Makko for every 5 parts of fine wood powder (2 grams Makko, 10 grams aromatic wood/herbs). Some types of wood, coarsely ground materials and extruded sticks may require a larger amount of Makko. Recipes containing finely powdered resin may require less Makko as the resin can act as a binding ingredient, especially if it contains water soluble gum (Frankincense is about 30% water soluble) or is in a semi-liquid state (Labdanum, Styrax). If you find that your dough is too crumbly or that your cones/sticks are too fragile, that is a sign you need more binder. Acacia or other gum binders can be used to strengthen particularly thin sticks that are more prone to breakage. Allow incense to dry for 3-5 days at room temperature to preserve the aromatic oils. It may take less or more time depending on humidity levels. A gentle fan can be used for better airflow too. Using the recommended ratios, one 8 oz bag will make 1,200 - 1,400 incense cones (0.5 inch x 1 inch). For beautiful and potentially perfect cones, use the silicone mini cone mold from Silikomart which has 66 cavities. Authentic Japanese Makko, also called "Tabu no ki."
