Larimar is a unique type of Pectolite, formed during ancient volcanic activity. Only discovered in 1974 in the Caribbean county of the Dominican Republic it is mined in high tropical mountains. The name Larimar is a combination of 'Lari' the daughter's name of the stone discoverer and "Mar", the Spanish word for Sea. Larimar is the only blue Pectolite in the world; its unique color comes from the broad absorption of the red end of the visible spectrum by Copper, allowing sky blue color to show through. The Mohs hardness is 5-6. The soft hues are believed to help maintain harmonious relationships, reduce stress, and foster feelings of love and peace. These powers are enhanced when Larimar is received as a gift.
