What Makes HNBR Ideal for Automotive A/C?
Years ago, CFC refrigerants were replaced with low-ozone alternatives such as R-134a.
HNBR (highly saturated nitrile) was introduced for these systems because it resists R-134a refrigerant, elevated temperatures, and the synthetic compressor oils used for lubrication.

Highly Saturated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR / HSN)
HNBR is a hydrogenated NBR that increases saturation in the polymer chain.
This gives HNBR better thermal stability, greater tensile strength, higher wear and extrusion resistance, improved ozone and oxygen resistance, and broader chemical compatibility compared to standard NBR.
With minimal degradation, HNBR may be used from -40°F to 300°F for extended periods.
