وصف
C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentraxin family member, binds to Strep. Pneumoniae's C-polysaccharide. It's a cyclic pentamer with five identical subunits, each having a lectin fold. The mouse CRP precursor is 225 amino acids long, with a 19 aa signal peptide and a 206 aa mature polypeptide. It's non-glycosylated and forms a pentamer via non-covalent bonds. IL-6 has little effect, while IL-1 is the primary inducer. CRP binds calcium-dependently to ligands like phosphocholine and injured cell membranes, acting as an opsonin and anti-inflammatory agent.
