Punch Monkey Plush, a Japanese macaque born in a Japanese zoo, gained global fame after videos showed him inseparable from a red ape plush toy. His mother, a four-year-old first-time mother, endured a difficult birth during that summer's intense heatwave and subsequently abandoned him entirely. As highly hierarchical social creatures, macaques shun individuals without maternal protection. Punch faced isolation, expulsion, and bullying, unable to integrate. To soothe his loneliness and anxiety, keepers provided towels and various soft toys for him to choose from. This orange doll instantly became his sole source of security: he drags it everywhere, clutches it tightly while sleeping, and immediately hides behind it when bullied. He drapes the doll's arm over himself, mimicking his mother's embrace.
