About this meteorite: The Campo Del Cielo are a group of iron meteorites that fell roughly 600 miles north west of Buenos Aires Argentina between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. While officially discovered in 1576 by a Spanish expedition party, native populations have known about the deposit site for thousands of years. The crater field covers an area of 2 x 11.5 miles and over 100 tons of material have been recovered from 26 distinct crater sites, making it possibly the heaviest meteorite to have ever been recovered. The meteorite's structure is made up of roughly 92% iron, and 6% nickel, with trace amounts of other rare minerals such as iridium, gallium, and cobalt.
