North Island is a historical U.S. Navy base located in San Diego, California. It was established as a Naval Air Station in 1917 and was originally known as Naval Air Station San Diego until 1955. North Island has a significant place in aviation history, as it was where many of the U.S. Navy's first aviators, including Lieutenant Theodore Ellyson, were trained as early as 1911.
Before being designated as a Naval Air Station, North Island was an uninhabited sand flat that had been used for horseback riding and hunting by guests of the Hotel del Coronado. The island was originally referred to as North Coronado Island, as it was separated from South Coronado by a shallow bay known as the Spanish Bight. In 1886, North and South Coronado were purchased by a developer to become a residential resort. The Navy was invited to use the site for aviation training in 1912 and opened a station, but abandoned it shortly thereafter. The Army then established an aviation school in 1913, and it wasn't until 1917 that Congress appropriated the land for two airfields. The Navy started with a tent city known as "Camp Trouble," but as time went on, it shared the island with the Army's Signal Corps, Air Service, and Air Corps Rockwell Field until 1937 when the Army left and the Navy expanded its operations to cover the whole of North Island.
North Island is the birthplace of many aviation milestones, including the first seaplane flight in 1911, the first mid-air refueling, and the
